Years before getting back into voiceover work, I was a cabinet and furniture maker, and in 2003, Atlanta television producers John Schipp and John Weatherford III contacted me about including my cabinet shop in a show called “My Ultimate Workshop”; it was featured on the DIY and HGTV Networks in 2004 and for years thereafter.
It was hosted by Bruce Johnson and had all kinds of unique home workshops from model train layouts, a cooking school, and a greenhouse, to glass blowing, restoring vintage cars, and woodworking. After they filmed at my place, I told them: “as long as you guys are traveling around to various types of work shops, you may want to visit my brother’s boat shop — he owns a traditional gondola building shop in Venice, Italy. Maybe you could expense a trip there?” They both said it was a great suggestion and booked a flight the next week! They still talked about their wonderful trip there even years later.
They enjoyed working with me, and months later we were back together in my shop producing a “how to” show they were pitching to DIY and HGTV, but right at that time, “team competition” shows were becoming the in thing, and my show wasn’t picked-up. John Schipp retired several years ago and moved away, and John Weatherford III sadly passed away in May 2023; both Johns had long careers in TV and radio and had won many broadcast awards. I am honored to have known them and to have been a small part of their work.
I put the same fanatical attention to details into my recording studio and voiceovers today that I put into my workshop and cabinets years ago. Give me a call or email me; I’d love to talk with you about your voiceover project!
